March 12, 2012, the day I went vegan for good. I went vegan in April 2010, but I only stayed vegan for less than a year. I will talk more about that in my next post.
I watched the DVD Eating 3rd Edition by Mike Anderson and I decided that I wanted to be vegan from then on.
I gave away all of the meat in my freezer and any foods containing animal products and never looked back.
In the beginning I enjoyed veganizing my favorite meals and french fries were my best friend.
I have to admit that I ate better in the beginning of my vegan journey than I do now. With all the new vegan products coming out I eat more processed vegan foods than whole plant based foods. My goal going forward is to get back to eating whole plant based foods and leave the processed vegan foods for a once in a blue moon treat.
Any advice I would give to someone who wants to go vegan.
- Transition into a vegan lifestyle- I have an all or nothing personality and it doesn’t always serve me well so I wouldn’t recommend going vegan like I did rather I would suggest giving up one animal product at a time starting with meat and ending with dairy (cheese especially since it’s actually the hardest thing to give up).
- Don’t let anyone tell you how to vegan- one thing that irritates me about vegans is when someone is trying to go vegan and they share their food haul online and they have a lot of meat substitutes or tofu in their haul and all you see in the comments is “that is so unhealthy”, ” you shouldn’t eat those foods”, “soy is bad”, ” blah, blah,blah”. We all have to start somewhere and in my opinion anything you eat that doesn’t cause animal suffering is what veganism is about.
- Don’t try to be perfect, do the best you can- being vegan is a lifestyle and it’s a journey. If you have slip ups or eat something you thought was vegan but found out it wasn’t, don’t beat yourself up about it, learn from it and keep moving forward.
