Weight loss and adopting a healthy lifestyle is more than just watching what you eat, it is also being aware of why you eat.
Stress, depression and boredom can be reasons why we eat that has nothing to do with hunger.
Eating under these conditions provides temporary comfort in the moment we are eating, but soon after guilt shame and discomfort set in.
How do we avoid soothing these emotions with food?
- Take an inventory of your stressors, eliminate the ones that are beyond your control. Develop ways other than eating to cope with your stress
- Learn to stay no
- Put yourself first
- Keep positive affirmations around you
- Stop negative self talk as soon as it starts (I literally say “stop” out loud when my inner critic starts yapping)
- Seek professional help. There is nothing wrong with getting help from a professional. Don’t let a perceived stigma interfere with your quality of life
- Talk to a friend
- Start a hobby
