The new year is well underway, resolutions have been made and goals have been set to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle.
The month after the new year is usually around the time where the enthusiasm behind the resolutions and goals starts to wear off.
With that being said, how do we go about keeping the resolutions and reaching the goals?
Motivation is not some magical force that overcomes us or some mind altering hypnotic state. It is simply the desire and the willingness to do something.
Motivation consists of three components:
- Activation
- Persistence
- Intensity
Activation is the decision to start a behavior; I want to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle
Persistence is the effort we put towards the behavior; I will commit to making positive changes to help me lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle
Intensity is the concentration and passion put behind achieving the behavior; I want to feel better in my own body, have more energy and lower my risk for illness by losing weight and living a healthier lifestyle
Look at your goal from the three components to measure your level of motivation. Your motivation may be low, which is fine we all have to start somewhere. It may be medium where the motivation is steady and gaining momentum. Your motivation may be high where you are ready to do whatever it takes to reach your goal.
No matter where you are, know that motivation is not something that happens to you, it happens through you.
